Lupita has been around for a few years but the world has not recognized her until now. Born not without privileges into a well-educated and influential African family she shows heart felt compassion and empathy for those far less fortunate.   Her admission of suffering from low self esteem because of the colour of her skin is courageous and admirable.

Many of us suffer from low self-esteem and it has a major impact on our lives.  Self-esteem is a basic human need and motivation.  American psychologist, Maslow, included self-esteem in his hierarchy of needs.  He described it as the need for respect from others, and the need for self-respect.

Nathaniel Branden  says that “self-esteem is the sum of self-confidence (a feeling of personal capacity) and self-respect (a feeling of personal worth).  It exists as a consequence of the implicit judgment that every person has of their ability to face life’s challenges, to understand and solve problems.  It is  their right to achieve happiness and be given respect.” (Nathaniel Branden is an American psychotherapist and writer known for his work in the psychology of self-esteem).

Low-self esteem is a major inhibitor for realizing our abilities and happiness.  Lupita Nyong’o we are so pleased you found a role model in Alek Wek and confirmation from Oprah Winfrey that black is beautiful.

That you will feel the validation of your external beauty, but also get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside. There is no shade in that beauty.”

New style icon Lupita Nyong’o  an inspiring beauty tops our list of people with great style, with a beauty that comes from the inside out.
