Bulgaria is now emerging in the global sphere of fashion.

By guest blogger:  Jane Koitka

Recently my good friend, roving photographer Alan McBride, went exploring Europe.  We asked him to let us know if he saw any outstanding or interesting fashions.  Imagine our surprise when he reported on a country we thought most unlikely to be a stand out in the fashion stakes.  He saw a new side of Bulgaria:  Bulgaria is now emerging in the global sphere of fashion.

Not many people talk about Bulgaria, let alone its fashion.  This country is tucked away in the most eastern point of Eastern Europe and over the past 50 years has been marred by political turbulence and economic instability.   During the Communist regime, 1944 – 1989, there was an extremely strict dress code, not permitting people of the country to wear Western Clothing.  If they did they faced harsh punishments including jail time.

Following the collapse of the regime, the country faced extreme difficulties with many Bulgarians forced into appalling poverty.  It hit its lowest point in 1997 when inflation reached 1000%.

Then came the new millennium! People were free to wear what they wanted. Textiles and clothing were manufactured in this country.  Western styles were introduced, and men and women started dressing quite provocatively.  They did not spare the glitter or the flashiness as they experimented with fashion and style in search of their own individuality.

Now, there is a dynamic group of Bulgarian designers making waves on the International Runways and not allowing their past to define their future.

They might still be struggling financially but they are united in their fashion mission. Their styles take on the beauty and elegance of their Eastern European routes mixed with the variety and diversity of Western fashions.  The result, designers who have a fearless attitude towards fashion.  It’s refreshing, creative and original.

This opens up some new and exciting fashions for the ‘fashion forwards’ of the world, particularly: –

Fashionistas.  These are the people who see fashion as an art.  Those who have a deep appreciation of the creativity and imagination used by designers and in the making of fashion items.

Cutting Edge Cool.  The people who fall into this style category are the ones who love discovering the latest and the newest designers.  Right now, this is the place for this group to look before Bulgarian designers are discovered across the world.

Urban chic.   These people like to define their own style and are always on the look out for designers in the most unexpected places.

For all these people a whole new world of fashion await you  – Bulgaria is now emerging in the global sphere of fashion. Take a look at Bulgaria’s Coiffure Beauty April 2014 magazine on Youtube   https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=LNU6rvBE8OQ#t=2

You may even want to put Bulgaria on your travel agenda.  Allan says, “Sofia and the rest of Bulgaria is truly stunning with wonderful buildings, architecture and history.  The food is delicious and inexpensive as is Bulgarian wine and beer.  Furthermore, the people are just delightful, nothing was too difficult for anyone I met.”  It is hard to ignore this recommendation from Alan who is a well-seasoned and highly experienced traveller.

If you visit from a fashion perspective then you may also want to experience some of the interesting places in Sofia such as RUSH, Junona, The Mall, or BLOK.

Apart from their inroads into the world of fashion, Alan also said ‘the other side of Bulgaria still exists and will continue to so for some considerable time – and for this we can be thankful.’
